Easy DIY Bike Light System.

|
1.
Grab yourself a VIRA Desk Lamp from
Ikea: This lamp is great; small, easy to clamp to your bar, and has
a built in switch. $9.99. |
2. Using included bulb remover (handy to keep) remove the bulb. |
3. Cut plug off wire. |
|
4. Firmly but steadily bend the fixture up and down and while up, break the metal nut out. It will fracture but leave the wire connected. This is the trickiest part, but after doing this a few times I have not broken the wire connection yet. |
5. You're not looking to break it at the ball connection, but above where it connects to the fixture tube. Once you have some wire visible, pull the rest of it out of the tube by gripping the wire itself. |
6. Cut or hacksaw off the metal bar. It is too hard to cut, but I fractured it a bit and bent it back an forth and it broke away. |
|
7. Next, using 3/4" binder clips (3/8" opening) found a staples, item 831594, or similar, put them in at the top and bottom. (bottom covers the remaining bar part) |
8. Pinch the inner handles together and remove them. You can remove the outside ones too, but no need, they may come in handy to remove the clips if you ever replace the bulb. |
9. You can push the bulb back in anytime, but it may be best to wait till light is assembled on the bike. These clips will stabilize the lamp after you push it back in, and stop the bulb from shaking and clinking off the sides, which I found to be an annoyance during technical MTB. |
