What's new at Absolute k-9? We are training service dogs! Service dogs
are especially trained to work with people who have disabilities.
Service dogs can pick up objects such as pencils, keys, and credit cards
for their person. They can open and close doors, press elevator
buttons, help carry out the trash, and do lots of other nifty things.
Sally's service dog is a Belgian Malinios names Sam. Sam has been
taught to bark on command to summon help if Sally's electric wheel chair
gets stuck or if she needs a human's help in some other way. Sam takes
off Sally's coat, hat, and gloves. He brings sally a dry towel when she
is finished her shower. Sam even learned to bring Sally's elderly
mother a walker when she had dizzy spells while visiting Sally.
Thai, an 18 month old Belgian Malinois who recently began training to
become someone's special helper dog. He is living with Sally and Sam
learning to walk beside a wheelchair and position himself, front, back,
left side and right side. There are many new things to learn. As
Thai's training progresses he will be retrieving his work harness,
finding and bringing shoes, maneuvering a cane from it's resting place
into his trainers hand, and learning to lie quietly under a table or
beside a chair so that his person can eat out in restaurants or attend
concerts or sporting events.
If you or someone you know has a disability and would like to be paired
with a working service dog, please let us know. We would like to make
that dream come true!
